The Flexi-Disc

A look inside the curious and often overlooked world of my favorite disposable sound carrier format, the flexi-disc. This presentation developed during the Fall of 2016 investigates the format's rise to peak production, fall into obscurity and resurrection. Also examined in this investigation is the promotional value and various iterations and the institutional usage of the format. Moreover, no discussion would be complete without diving into the fascinating phenomenon of Soviet contra-ban bone records. Flexi-Discs hold a wonderful place in the history of recorded sound, but their home in archives is challenging because they have always been intended to be short-lived and cast away.
