Research Design & Data Analysis

During the Spring of 2018 The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) a local nonprofit that helps connect local working musicians with health insurance options shared with us that their ability to council members on the basics of health insurance was suffering because their membership numbers are higher than ever. They considered the development of an informational video but were not sure if the expense would be worth the investment. To help HAAM understand the efficacy of this idea we conducted a set of qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey with musicians in the Austin area. The goal of this study was to identify a baseline of health insurance literacy for this population and then identify the efficacy of an informational video to increase understanding and knowledge of basic health insurance information. We found that exposure to an informational video did increase knowledge and understanding for our participants and the organization should consider the cost a valuable investment for their members.
